Preparation

How to format, partition or re-format, re-partition a hard-drive including boot or system-drive; how to eliminate undesired items with a Windows 2000 re-install [clean] but without reformatting or repartitioning

Backup Files

My Documents and shadow versions

My pictures, wallpaper, favorites, templates [“C:\My Documents\3. Computers and networking\Templates and Customizations dell” should have favorites and templates; make sure these are the most recent]

Select data from C:\Documents and Settings [get rid of temp files, temporary Internet files, logs] and from C:\Program Files

Backup Data

Internet Options [if possible] and Dial-Up Connections

Installation files for: Tweakui, WS_FTP, Macromedia, MathType, HTMLHelp

Properties and settings: Tweakui, Taskbar / Start properties, Desktop properties

Outlook profiles [including .pst / profiles / contacts / in and out emails / rules] and email accounts

Quicken data files

Office bar data; word dictionaries; templates

For non-standard bars, make and b/u folders

Installation

Windows 2000

Using the Windows installation CD; partitioning; users; folder options

Installing from Windows: Insert CD; …select Install new copy; upgrade to NTFS is optional; may delete / reformat partitions except the boot partition

Install from CD

Boot, F2 set CD as boot default [later: reset]

Follow options: delete any / all partitions; repair; install new copy

Install drivers from CD; the only problematic driver is the modem driver: Insert drivers CD, r-click My Computer, properties, ‘Hardware’ tab, Device Manager, expand ‘Other Devices;’ r-click ‘Simple Communications Controller;’ click ‘Properties,’ click ‘Reinstall driver;’ on ‘Upgrade Device Driver Wizard, click ‘Next,’ select ‘Search for a suitable driver for my device,’ click next, Check CD-ROM device, click Next, when ‘D:\...\wdxgaa.inf’ is found, click next

Internet Explorer 6.0; options; 128 bit security; AOL; blocking popups

Set start-Menu properties; desktop properties; folder options from Explorer

Control Panel… install tweakui, set all

Printers

Installation of Programs [and data to backup]… FRESH INSTALLATION BACKUPS

IE 6, blocking popups; AOL and Dial-Up Connection; backup Dial-Up Connections

WS_FTP

Adobe

Microsoft Office: first install needed elements of previous versions [2K] – Publisher and Small Business Edition tools

Install the latest version e.g. Office XP; related programs – Front Page

Macromedia Flash Player

Quicken; backup quicken profiles
