Application
to the Reviewing Faculty for the Position of Assistant Professor of
Mathematics:
The purpose of this letter is to express my interest in teaching mathematics at the Eureka campus of the College of the Redwoods.
My qualifications and experience for the faculty position in mathematics are as follows:
§ A Master’s Degree in applied mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology
§ A life long interest in mathematics and science – as a graduate student in engineering I took a number of the core doctoral curriculum courses in mathematics and physics. As a result my knowledge of basic mathematics, the foundations of mathematics, analysis, and applications of mathematics is especially good.
§ A Ph. D. in engineering from the University of Delaware – I specialized in mathematical and computational methods [numerical analysis] applied to fluid mechanics. A bachelor’s degree in engineering. I believe that my background in engineering, science and mathematical techniques makes me strong in the applicability and applications of mathematics. I would bring “relevance” to the classroom.
§ Ten years of teaching experience in engineering – including computational methods. I use analytical and visual skills in teaching.
§ Ten years experience working with people and helping with personal issues. I believe this would make me sensitive to those students who will benefit from encouragement to “hang in there” in the face of academic difficulties or personal problems. I am good at one on one counseling.
§ Knowledge of the California Higher Education System. I have taught in the CSU system for two and a half years. I have studied the system of higher education in California and incorporated this study in an unpublished work The Concept of Education with Curriculum Development. I plan to publish this work on the Internet.
§ Up-to-date knowledge of computers – Windows environment, use and programming of standard office programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. I can program in Fortran, Basic and C++ and have used Visual Basic and Visual C++. I am familiar with the use of calculators including graphing calculators. I can write HTML and use web development tools – I maintain a website www.horizons-2000.org. I can publish instructional material – content, instructor availability etc. – on the Internet; maintain communication with students and others through an information network. I would enjoy developing interactive computer instructional materials.
I have enclosed a résumé, statement of teaching philosophy and college transcripts. Names and contact information for three professional references are on the résumé.
Sincerely,
Anil Mitra
