The street-sweeping
program, as approved by the City council, consists of the following:
All downtown areas are swept Monday through Friday; most residential areas are
swept once a week. The detailed map on the following page reflects the areas
and days that sweeping occurs. Street sweeping generally occurs between the
hours of 01:00am and 11:00am.
It should be noted that this schedule is suspended when it
is raining and during "leaf season". Leaf season is that time of year
when City crews are focused on picking up the more than 10,000 tons of leaves
that fall from the many trees in San Rafael. During this period, the sweeping
routes are the same as during the rest of the year except that each individual
route may not be completed on the designated day. This is because the sweepers
must empty their hoppers more frequently due to the leaves. During this period,
the department assigns additional personnel to the leaf removal effort in the
form of running the sweepers additional shifts and utilizing a specialized
piece of equipment known as a leaf vacuum. The leaves are taken to Marin
Recycling where they are recycled into the topsoil making operation.
Equipment breakdowns and employee illnesses or injuries
also affect the schedule. The Department of Public Works is making every effort
to maintain the schedule as designated on the detail page. We appreciate your
patience and understanding when thing don't go as we had planned.
You will notice that not all City streets are swept.
Streets that are very narrow, very steep, or have no curbs cannot be swept.
I have no experience in Public Works. I am surprised I was
called. It may be due to candidate requirements. My presence is serious.
The conditions under which I will accept the position. 1. Learning. 2. My talents and unique abilities.
