EMPLOYMENT AND EXPERIENCE

I.        Philosophy, Computers, Mental Health

Research, Experiment and Writing, 1985-, Humboldt County, California. My purpose has been to have new experience and to follow my research and life interests. As part of that process I have organized a small business, held a variety of positions including work at Sempervirens – the Humboldt County inpatient psychiatric unit.

Fundamental Research Interest – my basic interest is the possibilities of human being. My study has been through philosophy, science, mathematics, evolution and design. My approaches include experiment with my own being and with computers as agents – computers as tools and as their possibilities as independent beings. Topics of interest include science, mind and consciousness; the nature of being; psychiatry; leadership in research and research organizations. I have written on these topics and a selection of essays is available on my website www.horizons-2000.org.

Computation - visual tools, program development, document development, numerical analysis. Visual Basic, Visual C++ with MFC, Visual Fortran 95 and mixed language programming and development of user interfaces - general, database and text applications. Programming and use of Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. HTML, JavaScript and VBScript tools, page and site design and site maintenance. Numerous projects including document automation, numerical analysis, website production and maintenance, use of computers in research [artificial intelligence] and computers as a model of agents, minds and consciousness.

II.     Engineering and Applied Mathematics

Associate Professor, 1983-85, Environmental Engineering/Energy Systems, California State University, Arcata

Assistant Professor, 1978-82, Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, University of Texas at Austin, Austin

Teaching Assistant, 1971-74, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Delaware

Research Fellowship, 1970-71, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Delaware

Research, Consulting and Teaching Experience.. Waves and Stability of Fluids - Theory, mathematics and computation. Wave forces. Applied Mathematics and Computation - Development and use of perturbation and regularization methods.  Standard numerical analysis, finite elements and programming for engineering. Mechanics and Design - Kinematics, dynamics and vibrations of machines and mechanical systems. Strength/failure. Energy - Thermodynamics, heat transfer, resource analysis and combustion kinetics.  Propulsion. Conventional, nuclear and renewable energy and power. Air pollution issues and control. Communication - Design and writing of papers and reports. Graphics and technical drawing.
