Vision quest: Object relations

Aim

To make object relations healthy.

Can they be flexible?

On object relations

Object relations is the architecture of relational self – cognitive-emotive templates of self and others, emotional expectations and anticipations, defenses, regulation of closeness-distance.

They are significantly pre-linguistic, emotionally hard-wired. They present in posture, breath, muscle tone, autonomic patterns, micro‑movements, affective rhythms. They therefore are more amenable to meditative silence in which they arise and are felt.

The problem of relational pain for me is that of object loyalty—self vs other; I rather feel pain than be disloyal (which is an internalized relation, not conceptual).

Object relations themes to focus on

Self-affirmation vs criticism

Autonomy vs connection

Self-worth vs doubt

Object relations vision quest structure

Day 1—hike in, set up camp, settle nervous system; stabilizes the relational field.

Here’s a clean, layered structure that fits your style:

Day 2—observe people, voices, emotions showing up in one’s mind.

Day 3—observe internal shifts: confident-doubtful, calm-nervous, expansive-contracted, connected-isolated.

Day 4—repatterning: practice self – calming / validation / companionship / authority / permission.

Day 5—journal: internal objects that appeared, which are outdated / helpful / need repatterning; what relational stance feels right.

Two chairs practice

The idea—object relations change: through relational repositioning, not intellectual reframing.

The practice—imagine two chairs.

Chair 1: old internalized object (whoever).

Chair 2: current self.

Have a conversation, feel pain if it arises, acknowledge the bond, honor the loyalty, let the old object step back—not rejected, not erased, but de-centered.
